Chick Habit by April March is owned by a foreign record label, called Sympathy For The Record Industry. They where hard to track down and although we sent mulitple email we were unable to aquire a response. So we went ahead and used the song.
We do not think there will be any problems as we stated that it was a non-profit educational project. We have sent Youtube an email explaining this so that when it goes up it will not get flagged for copyright.

Myspace and Album cover progress...

I have set up an email and the artist myspace. I have emailed you all the information necessary to get started.

ARTIST NAME

So we realised that 'Sparky' sounds like childrens TV character or a dog. Sooo we brainstormed some others names, the final two are:
* Skye
* Sapphire (Saffy for short)

Ms Blakcborow really liked both of them, though i think she was leaning slightly more towards Sapphire. But we really really like both and cannot decide so we will undergo some audience feedback to see which comes out on top.
Ok our deadlines Friday 27th November,
we have made a start on our Myspace page and have filled in any gaps on our video sequence.

Myspace:
It has the basics of a good myspace page, however we need to add in our photos of the shoot and write up somemore interesting information about Sian.
Majorly we need to think of a name for her, as this will need to be changed asap.
We've uploaded photos of Sian from everyday activities.

Video:
thankfully now all the spaces are filled which is great cos it means we can focus on putting in effects and trying to make it look good.
We need to get feedback from miss before we are complete, hopefully get this by wenesday so we have enough time to alter anything and also have our screening on the Thurs.

Shoot:
Today was meant to be the shoot but unfortunately due to washing the dress, it was dripping wet today which meant we were unable to do it.
Which is why we have now made sure our myspace is getting done, therefore we are technically ahead of schedule as the album cover shouldn't take as long.

Miss.B feedback

Yesterday miss gave us our first proper feedback on our footage. She said...

*Our "camera movement was the best out of all the groups"! (OO YEAH)

*  Some shots she felt were too long, and we agree. We need to cut them up and put other shots inbetween to keep it interesting.

* She thought we got a great performance out of Sian, but that her lipsyncing wasn't always perfect so we need to play around with the editing to get it as good as we can. Or we can just make it so amazing that no one notices.

Quick Update...

So far we have done the majority of our sequence, although there are a few blank spaces that need doing. Because of our performance shots turning out rather poor we've decided to put them in for now. So we're either going to re-shoot them or use some of the masses of footage we already have.

We have successfully completed the lamppost shot, revolving door shot, changing clothes down the street.
We are really happy so far with the project however know we need to put in the time in order for it to be finished and look its best :)

shoot

We need a photoshoot of Sian for our album cover, the next possible time we could do would probably be Monday. It shouldn't take long because its only a few snaps we have in mind for her. However because our performance shots didn't look good when we captured them, we may need to re-take them just so we have a couple that we can cut away to.
We are going for a black&white album cover, with Sian posing in the middle of the cover. As shown below our inspiration is the twiggy photo of her on the tv.

Black and White effect in Videos

We really liked the idea of having some shots of our video in black and white. I saw this video on MTV the other day, and thought the quick flashes of black and white that it has look really cool and effective. The black and white shots tend to be the same as the colour shots, maybe just slightly closer or from a slightly different angle, quickly inter cut with colour shots. I think we should try this out, as it could be really great.

NAME FOR OUR ARTIST

Ok so we were thinking we need to come up with an artist name very soon. We were asking around for some suggestions, and when speaking to our actress she came up with a name we rather like which is 'Sparky' and it links to her name Sian Parkinson so has a relevence to our artist, but also is catchy and sounds modern and cool. So that is what we've got for now, unless we can think of anything better.

shoot 3- 10/11/09

Yesterday we finished our final shoot of Sian's performance. We set up the green screen in misses room and took MCU, CU, ECU shots of Sian.
We had her in a sequined sparkly boob-tube dress which looked amazing with the white background, however something Tom pointed out was that the sequins were reflecting some of the green from the light, therefore when we go to take all the green out of the shot it may leave the dress with holes in it.
Today we will have to try it out and see whether or not it worked. If it does we will be happy because it means we have more to put into our sequence, however if it turns out that it didn't work, it wouldn't be such a big deal as we do have a great amount of footage already and it was the beauty shots which we wanted in the first place.

Now all filming has finished, we can focus on editing for the rest of the week.
After having a prep talk with Miss too, we are going to start focusing on setting up our myspace soon and then while someones editing someone can be focusing on the website. Once these two things are pratically completed we can do our album cover.
And hopefully will be finished in time for the deadline:)

Shoot 2- 8/11/09

Yesterday we did our Bricklane shoot which due to poor weather, were unable to do 2 weeks ago.
The weather was good, it wasn't raining and looking back on footage the shots thankfully don't look gloomy. Other than being very very cold, the day was an overall success.

We managed to get every shot we planned which was great, and if anything we took more than one take of each. Which means when editing we have a variety of takes to choose from.
We started off filming Sian around Liverpool st. but unfortunately after being told off for filming there we moved onto Bricklane.
We tried to experiment with different shots such as a contra zoom and walking backwards in a crowd of people.

Today Hannah and I captured all the footage and have started on editing some of the transition shots. We have completed a revolving door transition, which looks rather good but we will need to get Tom's feedback before putting it into our video.

Now we are trying out a lampost change of clothes shot.
The whole day was a success, we got everything we needed and seemed to have a good day of filming. Some passers by had some really good reactions to Sians performance and so we are also going to try and incorporate some of that.

Performance

This is a video I thought we should show sian before the shoot, in terms of performance I think she should study how some other artists interact with their surroundings and with the camera.
This is a good example I found to show sian...

Inspiration

Today Miss.B showed us a music video made by a group years ago.
Miss thought it would help us understand what she was trying to portray in her feedback.
It was a music video set in london, with a sepia effect.
The girl acting in it was running through london, moving her head in a lot of shots and making interactions with the public.
The even had shots of the market traders shouting and lots of shots of the stalls themselves.

Because this was shot so long ago the quality wasn't too good and they obviously didn't have the techonology that we do know.
So we intend to include much more interaction, with her blowing kisses into the camera and constantly smiling.

Additionally, when Jake Wynne gave us his feedback on our initial idea he mentioned that we need to have a narrative to end our video with. As our initial idea was to just have Sian running off into the distance, starting off with a CU and going into a LS.

His feedback then made us think we really needed an ending, he said she needs to end up somewhere, a shop or even to meet someone. However, now after viewing this other video, where they have their actress running off into the distance with her hair waving around, we have decided to stick with our initial idea and have her running blowing kisses.

Prop List

Prop list for Sunday 8/11/09

On Sunday we need to take the majority of things we took the the previous shot, if anything we should have less things to take down because we wont be reusing outfits.

  • camera
  • tripod
  • clipboard
  • still camera
  • umbrella
  • make-up: eye glitter, coloured shadows, red lipstick, powder (hannah&dan)
  • skirts x3
  • tops: vest tops, t-shirts
  • dresses x2
  • jumpers x2
  • tights: coloured and black (don't forget the spares)
  • shoes: petite heels (ankle black heels) & plimsoles
  • speakers (Danni's)
  • Mp3 (Danni's)
  • compact mirror

That's all i can think of right now.

Artist Name

We started thinking about the name of our artist in the lesson yesturday. As we have a solo female it would be obvious to just choose a real name like Lily Allen, Cheryl Cole or Katy Perry. However we were thinking we wanted to make our artist more induvidual with a stage name, we've seen this with artists such as Pink and Little Boots. I think a 'real' name could work but i would like something really unique and memorable like Beyonce or of course our vidoe's fashion inspiration Twiggy!

Album Cover ideas

Above is an image of what we think would look very good for our album cover, seeing as our is 60's themed and this image could really look good with Sian.
This is only a initial idea, we have not thought much about it but today during our editing session we started talking about it.
We would like it to be simple but yet really connote what we portray with our video.
To be continued....

Shot List- 8/11/09

SHOT LIST

  • Lamppost change outfit shot
  • Person walking past change outfit shot
  • Walking towards camera change outfit shot
  • Contra Zoom

  • Shoes, legs Voyeurism

Feedback- BLK

Seeing as we have our shoot on sunday we thought it would be best to ask Miss Blackborow for her feedback on our footage already.
Miss Blackborow thought our location, costume and mise-en-scene were all really good and she really liked the chereographed moves down Little Marlbourough street.
She really seemed to like the split screen we have been working on too.

Here's her advice:
  • We need really tight shots cutting into her face; CU on eyes
  • More cutesy type shots on her legs
  • She needs to exaggerate more when she dances around; facial expressions, winking to the camera, blowing kisses, flirting, head movements.
  • Tight close shots of her spinning round towards the camera
  • Shots of her turning into the camera frame; so that she's doing all the work
  • She would like more choreographed moves
  • More movement of arms, legs, body genstures
  • Head moving, sitting down
  • Coming up to the camera very close
  • Be more voyeuristic- use it to our advantage and play on it
  • Use the public interest more; film their reactions more and have sian interacting with them more. Film the market traders reactions to sian down Bricklane.
  • Changes of pace; running, skipping
  • crazy movements
  • wides/cut-aways for reactions mise-en-scenes
  • Should film the red bus in brick lane and have sian running up stairs. Get customers reactions.

We are happy with our feedback, and glad that miss likes our footage so far. We think our camera work was good but definitely do need more moving shots which will alter the pace of the video.

The Shoot!

So over half term we had our shoots! On wednesday 28th Ot me and danni and tom went by ourselves to our location and shot some scenery shots so that we didn't have to waste Sian's time. Then on Saturday 31st Oct we did our first shoot with Sian. We shot in our Carnaby and Soho locations and i think this actually went really well. We realised that when having moving camera-work, it looked much better if we carried the camera on a tripod to steady it, so i think that those shots look much better. However although we were planning on shooting on Sunday 1st Nov there was torrential rain. Shooting outside in October and November we knew that we may come up against weather issues, and so we planned for this by having many colourful umbrellas on stand-by, that we could work into our shoot. However, this was just too heavy and we didn't want to risk the equipment in such heavy rain. Consequently we are now shooting next sunday 8th Nov - this is when we will do our shots in Brick lane and Spitalfields. Having looked at our footage from last sunday, we have realised that it is quite good to have a weeks gap between the shoots as we can really see what we need to do. Therefore we were able to come up with another shooting list for this weekend, meaning we won't miss anything. So here is our rough shooting list for 8th Nov:
* Lamppost change outfit shot
* Person walking past change outfit shot
* Walking towards camera change outfit shot
* Contra Zoom
* Graffiti Alley Shots
* Revolving door change out fit shots
* Routemaster bus shots

So hopefully this weekend the weather won't be as bad!
Also we need to arrange a date for the green screen, perofrmance shots, and that really needs to be done this week but we will arrange that in our group meeting today at 10am! ok.

First Day Shoot

Saturday 31st October:

Today we did our first proper day of shooting.

We met at Carnaby Starbucks at 10.

By the time we had finished sorting out equipment and sians costumes and make-up it was about 1100.

11.30- we starting filming various shots down carnaby street

As we had found an alley called Little Marlborough street, we thought this was a perfect spot to film a variety of different shots.

We filmed her a number of times singing the song the whole way through whilst changing costume.

1230- we moved into Soho, where we met a cab driver and filmed the narrative. And we thought as we were already there it would be a good idea to make use of the nice surroundings and film sian the whole way through again

Shot list

Shots we need to get for every location are:
CU, BCU, MS, LS  track shots
Side tracks, walking in to shot shots, lamppost shots, changing clothes shot, person wipe shots.

Sian swinging round a lamppost
Location signs (28th Wednesday)
- Carnaby street
Sian walking down Abbey Road

Cab shots:
- CU on eyes
- Her hands on blackberry (perhaps with a message on the screen)

- Her feet in heels

^ We are planning on having her drive down the road/round the corner in a black cab.

But in these shots you don't get to see her full identity, keeping it on a low will create the suspense of who it is.

Walking down bricklane, with the graffiti

^ shown in pictures below

what do you think?

I was watchin some random clips yesterday and looking and some shots and editing techniques,
and what looked quite good wasa shot of the actual station name, therefore allowing the audience to briefly understand where our actress is and then do some quick cut aways to well known landmarks within the place.

just a suggestion,
:]

Thursday, October 22, 2009

Below are the pictures from our location recee,
We went to carnaby street and brick lane.
Unfortunately we were unable to go and check out Abbey Road therfore have decided to do another recee type thing on wednesday 28th.
On this day we will travel to Abbey Road and take a look at what good shots we could shoot, also we have decided to take the camera out and shoot all the scenery shots rather than performance shots, this will therefore save us time when we go to shoot on saturday. And don't have to leave our actress waiting around for ages.

Shots we can film without her will be:
Carnaby sign.
Liberty store
Soho square
Spitafields sign
mirror sculpture
routemaster bus

Doing this will really give us a head start and a much smoother shooting day on saturday and sunday!

Make-Up

As we are sticking with the 60s Twiggy theme we really want to try to replicate her iconic eyelashes...

I didn't know whether it would be better to do it with A LOT of mascara, or just to buy false eye lashes. So i tried it out with mascara (above) and it didn't really work as well as i had hoped, because they are not really very striking, yet if i had put any more mascara on, my eye lashes would have been really really clumpy and ugly.

I did some research and found that Twiggy's make up artist actually drew her bottom lashes onto her bottom eye lid, that's why they look so long. I did try this out but it completely failed, it's so hard to do unless you're a professional. Soo. I think it will be easier and look better if we get false lashes.

Also i noticed that in one picture Twiggy has quite striking blue eye shadow and bold black eyeliner, so I thought this could work well with our video. I also thought that having bold glittery eyes would be a modern update to a striking eye look, so i tried this out a little bit too.

COSTUME

We need a lot of costume changes for our video, so we need to get a lot of outfits. We are going for the Twiggy, 60s look so we want Sian to wear straight mini skirts, shift dresses and colourful tights and coats. (More outfits pics to come...)

Test Shoot

Changing Outfit Test Shoot - DONE :)

In out triple lesson on Thursday we practiced some of the shots we are hoping to do in our video. We found a gorilla costume in the media prop cupboard, so decided to use it to make our test shoot more interesting. The shots where to test out some techniques of costume and location chan Here are the results...

The Lampost Shot - Walking past a lampost we are going to try and cut and change the actors costume with a replica shot and croping the shots in editing. I think that this test shot was relatively effective, but it did move and we could not have that in our final project, so we will try and shoot it, but we will cut it if its wrong. The editing is tedious and minute camera movements are clearly noticeable, however the rewards of implementing a shot like this could really boost our videos style and technical calibre.

Changing Cotsume Shot -This is a technique where our actress walks towards the camera and along one long take (shot multiple times in alternate costumes) her clothes change, hopefully as smoothly as possibly. In the test I think that the changes where not subtle and therefore where ineffective. I want to have multiple costume takes of each shot, so that this technique i an option, but again I reckon it will not come out too smoothly unless we take care with each shot. I want to try and use this technique in the final project.

The Person Wipe - This is where we shoot our actress walking fom the same angle, twice in different costume and possibly in a different location. Then by getting someone to walk in front of the shot, close to the camera we can edit the shot so that it appears the person pasing is a wipe and the change of location or costume looks fluid. Essentially if pulled off this shot is stylish and an effective way of moving the video on. I think that we can do this, and that it will look good. The test shot is pretty effective on our second take, and now we know what to be careful about doing the same and how to shoot it. I think that its likely this technique will make it into our final cut.

Group Meeting 14/10/09

Things to do..
* Storyboard - DONE

* Changing outfit test shoot - Lesson time
* Shooting Schedule - Lesson Time Next week
* Going to Sian's to choose cotumes: tba
* Green Screen test -
yesterday we took a look at the green screen and realised that it wasn't right as it wasn't big enough and we want to shoot her full length. So now we have to look for a studio... --> Danni: going to try and call up to find a decent and reasonably priced studio.

Group meeting 14/10/09
Today we have just sorted out times for our London recee sunday:
Meeting at Carnaby Street/ Starbucks @ 11.30

Also need to book a day to go and raid Sian's wardrobe.

Cheers guys, very pleased the storyboard is complete.
we need to upload a pic of it, ill try remember my camera tomorrow.

Monday, October 12, 2009

Hi
I was thinking as we have a lot to do, and me & danni have a half day tomorrow maybe we should do the lampost change of costume test shoot then? i know you are in a lesson Tom but maybe we could start it at lunchtime so you could help (...or you could just not go to your lesson?) - but yeah i think we need to use that time.

Also we really need to work out how we are going to acheive the white box effect - we should maybe try out the green screen and see if it works or not - if not, we need to start looking at studios i think :S

H xx

Group Meeting 12/10/09

Ok so we had a group meeting today at lunchtime and continued it in the lesson, and we think it went really well as we achieved a lot. We discussed Sians lip syncing test, and as she barely knew the words we think she did really we'll and with a bit of direction she could be great!

We began to do our storyboard on post-it notes which we then stuck onto sugar paper. This was really good and we all had so many ideas, and so drawing them helped us all to visualise them. This also helped us to get a clearer image in our minds of what we wanted, and so we can really see this video coming together now! yay.

We confirmed that our london streets location reece day would be this sunday 18th october. And we also decided that either monday or tuesday next week we would go round to Sian's house (our actresses house) after school and pick out the exact outfits we want her to wear, as she has a lot of very nice clothes to choose from that fit the image we are going for. We may also be borrowing some 60s inspired clothes from another friend of ours, Holly, so depending on what Sian has we can see what we need, and arrange to borrow somethings from her too.

Basically we are now getting orangsied so that we know exactely what we are doing on each of our shoots so that they run as smoothly as possible.

H, T, D
xx
Currently Hannah and I are doing a group meeting, and are thinking that now our main priority to have done by Wednesday is a Storyboard- even if need be a draft one- it should include the shots we are definitely thinking of and then perhaps add in a couple that we would like to try out and see if they would work.

Unfortunately i was unable to film a shot sequence of Sian changing her outfits, however we have decided that during our meetings we will leave 30mins to film one of us walking past certain surroundings around the school just to get a feel of what types of shots look best and how long it will actually take to change clothes and set up different sets.

We are also concerned on how we are going to show our treatment onto a storyboard as we have two main locations and are intending to get as much good footage as possible on both locations and then through editing make it work how we want it to look.

We have such good ideas for our video but are unsure of how it is really going to work, therefore today have booked another group meeting at 1 in order to do a rough plan of a storyboard and then hopefully by wednesday we should have a final one and be on our way to doing our shot list!!

Above is a video of Sian, our actress, practicing her lip syncing to Chick Habit.
Hannah and I filmed her during our frees just so we could get an idea of how good she was and what we have to work on.
Considering she hadn't learnt the lyrics before i think she did rather well and with a little bit more work done it will look great and very realistic.

up for that, sure Tom will be tooo!

:)
Hi
Danni if you are doing the lip syncing test with Sian tomorrow i have free in the morning so let me know if you want me to come and help.

Also I really like the idea the Mrs B suggest about having streets sign in our video (like the next advert) and she suggested fashion related ones, so i was thinking so far carnaby street, bond street, and spitalfields? what do you guys think?

Epic Journeys Album Cover

Epic Journeys - General Branding and Styling

The Band
A london based band Female lead singer (called Jo, aged 19), Male lead Guitarist. Partnership similar to that of The Ting Tings and The White Stripes. They sing upbeat indie alternative rock with a techno beat

Target Audience
The target audience is quite young - we think the core audience would be teenagers and pre teens ; 12 - 19 year olds. Predominantly girls.
General Marketing Campaign for UK
* We want Epic Journey's to have an official website similar to that of Lily Allen quite simple, predominatnly balck and white - but then with bold block colours for headings etc.
* We would also have a facebook and myspace page for the band. Jo also has her own Twitter.
* Epic Journey will release their first single 'Lift Off ft Clavin Harris' on the 23/10/09 in time for the school holidays. And their self titled debut album will be released on the 14th December in time for Chirstmas.
* As Jo is the face of the band she would have her won clothing and jewellery line at H&M, she will also do a series with Addidas classics.
* They will do a free gig for fans in the H&M in oxford street on the 23rd Oct to promote their new single and soon to be released album. Free makeovers will be available for the fans at H&M as well, done by Rimmel London, create synergy between the Rimmel and the Epic Journeys brand, as well as emphasising that they are a London based band.

Group Meeting 30/09/09

Now we have our actress we can really start on the pre production planning for our music video. We realise that we need to have regular meetings in order to make sufficient progress, so we looked at our timetables and have worked out some regular meeting slots where we are all free. These will be on
Week 1 - Wenesday P3
Weeks 2 - Tuesday P7 & 8, Friday P5

We decided that Danni was going to test Sian's lip sycning skills by doing making test footage, on friday, this way we can be sure that she will be right for our video.

We have also decided on some initial shooting dates we are thinking of which are: Sat 24/10/09, Sat 31/10/09 and Sun 01/11/09.

The very exciting thing that was established from this meeting was that a studio shoot will be possible! YAY! Through a contact of Mrs Blackborow we have a studio in mind, the CLC Pinewood Studios and so we will go and see it with Mr Deans to do some test footage and discuss the details of dates with the man there. Will will go an see it probably on Tuesday 13th October ... :D

On our next meeting which will be tuesday P7&8 we have decided that we will make a detailed first storyboeard and shot list, to help us really begin to visualise and plan the details of our shoot.

Actress! :)

Ok so I recently asked our choice of actress whether she is willing to star in our music video, and at first she wasn't too happy about it but once i played her the song and she heard about our treatment she was beginning to really like the idea of it.

Actress- Sian Parkinson
She is a blonde female aged 17, who is very petite and quirky.
I think she is perfect for the part because although she may not be an amazing performer she is very stylish and so will feel comfortable wearing the outfits we have for her. Sian has her own unique style, and doesn't always tend to follow the new modern 'it' fashion trends- this is absolutely perfect for our video and we too are looking for the 1960's fashion and she is very much so into that era!
